After a few days back here in the UK I am enjoying some great spring weather and good company! Although I do miss home (Berlin) and the creative city vibe and my lovely fun friends there!! I played the first date of my ‘northern hemisphere spring tour’ at the GreenNote in Camden. It was a lovely intimate gig and the Canadian Band ‘Miss Quincy’ was a highlight! Grungy sexy blues rock.. And Northampton Umbrella Fair was a fun show too, completely different crowd, younger and drunker.. I had a guest on stage for a song and made up a spontaneous song about a bus..?! Anyway it was a good night and I’m looking forward to the rest of the shows! Until next time.. :) adios X prita

Walking through the backstreets of Neukolln Berlin the other day, I met an old Chinese man in his quaint shop filled with Buddhas and incense. I stumbled to speak to him in English, realised that he didn’t speak much, then tried to speak German – I don’t speak much, and ended up chatting in Chinese.. found our common ground.. it was such a funny moment to be speaking Mandarin in Germany!?

At dinner that night with my new housemate and her friends we celebrated her Birthday, by eating Greek food and drinking red wine (rottvien) at a local restaurant. I learnt some phrases from my new friends – (probably spelt wrong) ‘Kanst du mir bitte die rottvien geiben’, translates as ‘can you me please the red wine pass’. With all this learning and drinking I think I started to forget English.. and as the night went on I started speaking Greek too..’thai-thala nero parakalo’, ‘I would like water please’ who would’ve thought it..

One of my housemate’s friends is from Jordan, so as the night progressed we started talking about culture and language in Jordan and I realized I could speak a bit of Arabic too..’Marhaba, kayfa haluk?’ ‘hello, how are you?’ thanks to an old Libyan friend.. this is what I love about travelling – all the language and culture and playing with words.. and the funniest thing is when I get asked how to say something in English – my native tongue.. and can’t think of a word to fit.. or if I do.. how to use the word.. in what context, in what situation.. for example the other night I was out with a German friend and she said ‘oh he is so awful!!’ and I was laughing.. because what she meant was – here is a guy who is trying so hard to be cool and look good and by doing that he is making a fool of himself – the way he was dressed and the way he was acting.. so she said well how do you say that? if you don’t use ‘awful’? I had to really think about what she was meaning to say.. so I said ‘up-himself’ but no that’s slang.. ‘too cool for school’ again slang.. ‘try-hard’ slang.. hmmm this is harder than I thought.. ostentacious?? But would we ever use that? Is that even right?? And so the language lessons continue for me too!!

On the way to the restaurant we walked along the frozen river canal – it was so pretty even though it was frozen solid.. I was pondering walking over the water just to see if I could.. but there were too many holes in the ice and eventually I thought better of it.. although I could still throw a boot and see if it sinks??..

I’m sending you an invite to hear more stories and songs at the shows I have coming up in Germany and the UK. I realise some of you live far away but seeing as their are some 12,000 or so Aussies living in Berlin and many more in the UK- chances are if you’re one of my Aussie friends – by a few degrees of separation you probably know someone here – if you’re one of my European friends it may even be close enough for you to pop over and visit! After the tour finished in the UK I decided it was time to hit the road travelling in a different kind of way! visiting old friends and family and having some adventures!!

I started with a week in the romantic city of Paris, catching up with my old friend Kymy and exploring the streets, fromageries, patisseries and cafes.. taking in all the sounds, smells and sights and soaking it all up!! I really enjoyed my stay and went to a couple of open mic nights to check out the local talent – amazing! I met heaps of lovely people! so friendly!! and got to practice my few words of french, much to my delight and theirs! We went to a great ‘spoken word’ open mic night which mainly features poetry at Au Chat Noir, I was blown away by the talent! seriously.. amazing.. and inspiring!

Next on the trip was a stop in London catching up with old mates from highschool! and a couple of days in lovely stoke newington aswell as a great xmas end of year gig at McQueen’s in Shoreditch! and I met Maxi Priest! DJ Clare, Sonarelle and some very funky players.. and caught up with more friends!!

Then a quick 3 hour train ride to Plymouth and I got to meet up with my brother and sister in law and all their crew!! followed by xmas in the beautiful old city of Bath with a traditional Aussie cold salads and prawns lunch!! lots of good times.. and lots of chocolate…!!!

After an impromtude ‘house concert’ in Plymouth with the crew I was invited on a road trip to Ireland! so off we went a few days later and had an amazing trip around Southern Ireland, visiting Cork, Kinsale, Kenmare and more.. gorgeous little towns.. eating and drinking our way around the greenery of Ireland.. New Years Eve was a blast and NYE eve eve was an even bigger blast!!

    and so the adventure continues..

HOw was your New Years’ Celebration?

I was in a town I’d never been to, in a country I’d never before visited with a bunch of lovely new friends I’d just made!!! Talk about ‘New’ year! We were in Ireland, and after visiting the Jameson’s Distillery the day before and having a randomly huge night in Cork visiting all the bars and clubs we might like to go to on NYE.. we made it as far as the local pub.. and I was on Lemonade all night… having helped drink Ireland out of whiskey the night before.. I was designated key holder!!

I love this time of year for reflecting and starting fresh! and with new inspiration from the Jameson Motto – this year’s theme is ‘Sine Metu’ or – ‘without fear’

I have to remind myself sometimes that I am living the dream! my dream of living in Europe, travelling and playing my music everywhere I go!! and that it is amazing to be here.. sometimes when you travel you get a bit lonely or feel isolated, overwhelmed by the huge choices in front of you and all around you.. but I have made some great new friends over the last few weeks and re-connected with some gorgeous old friends and family.. travelled to some lovely and inspiring places – Paris! Je taime’ , Ireland – what’s the craic?!, and all around the UK – London, Plymouth, Bath.. ‘allright?’ (yeah I’m allright how about you? – oh you’re just saying hello.. right.. ok.. )

I’ve been doing lots of sitting and writing in cafes.. one of my favourite things! .. and have written a few new songs lately.. travelling around and experiencing new places.. visiting new and old friends.. which I love!!

There are lots of gigs in pipeline in different countries..UK, Germany, Faroe’s, Dubai, Spain.. and I’m looking forward to a great 2012!! and wishing you the best year yet!! with lots of love, happiness and success coming your way!!

Sometimes you get reminders.. To be grateful for where you are and all you have..and how you got here.. Today I had a reminder..

When I look back at the journey so far in my musical life, there are so many people that have helped me along the way, whether big or small every helpful gesture has smoothed the way ahead for me. People that have -opened doors literally and figuratively, fixed the sound, found me a bed, got me in touch with other musicians, introduced me to booking agents, gigs, venues, recording studios, taken me on tour, gave me a smile, bought a cd, played my music on radio, said a kind word of encouragement or just been there listening.. I sometimes get so wrapped up in my own world with all the things going on in my life that I forget to say thankyou.. So I am sending out lots of little thankyou notes into the universe now to all of you that have helped in some way along the way.. You know who you are..

I was just talking to my mum today about the moment I decided to pursue music seriously, and it was an actual moment I remember very clearly..
Sitting on a stormy beach by myself in St maarten in the Caribbean, I had been working for a year as a stewardess on a yacht and although there were many great adventures it wasn’t making my heart sing, I was exhausted and hadn’t been playing my music, and I knew I needed to do something about it.. I was having a moment.. Down at the beach writing, pouring my heart out in the pages of my journal, listening to music on my iPod with tears streaming down my face.. There was no-one else on the beach and I needed to be alone to get this out.. So I wrote and wrote and wrote until I had written everything that was making me unhappy.. Very cathartic! Then I turned the page and said, well what do I want? And started writing writing writing.. It was very clear that I needed to play my music again, play in front of audiences, and get out there and just do it!!! I had no idea how this was Going to happen as I was still working fulltime..  When I had finished writing I packed up and walked down the beach.. I heard live music in the distance so I followed the sound til I found this little beach bar at the end of the bay.. Bought a drink and sat to watch the band! In the break I got up the courage to talk to the guys in the band and they invited me to play the next evening at the beginning of their set! I was thrilled to get the chance to play in public again! At the next gig a guy from the local radio station was watching and asked if I’d like to come and do an interview and play live..and so rolled on the opportunities by talking to people, being offered gigs, putting myself out there and accepting help From all kinds of great people along the way..

I’ve had people show me the best places to busk in New York, give me a chance to play in their cafe, offer me festival spots, help me with a foot in the door in Europe.. Organize gigs for me,help me with artwork for CDs and posters, amazing photographers take pictures for me, people that helped me with my website, people that have taken me on tour as a support act, taken me under their wing.. Given me a roof over my head, given me
Advice.. Or just been a friend and listened.. With a shoulder to lean on.. So many many many things… And I am truly grateful!!!

Well I’ve been back in WA for about 5 or 6 days now.. I arrived to the cool weather of Perth on the 6th of September and left the next morning for the warmer weather of Broome and some quality time with my family.. lots of photos.. short videos.. mostly by my new film makers in the making.. Taj (3yrs old) and Keegan (7yrs old) ..hilarious.. we rode camels on the beach for my Birthday and had a delicious lunch at Zanders on Cable beach in Broome.. Seafood galore!! I was spoilt in the most wonderful ways by my family.. taken out for lunches and dinners.. coffees.. spending time playing with the kids.. my gorgeous nephews and getting pampered with my sister and my mum! at kiva! very nice!.. I love Broome, it’s laid back feel and it was such a nice way to come home to the relaxed pace and the beautiful landscape of our north west.. I soaked in the blue blue skies, the turquise waters, the white sand and the red earth.. such vivid colours.. and amazing boab and mango trees.. and now I’m back in Perth ready to catch up with all my friends and family here.. and do some awesome shows with my BAnd!! I’ll be finishing off the final touches of my EP in the next few days.. then sending it off to print! very exciting!! off to the doc tomorrow to try and find a cure for this persistent cold.. and then I’ll be good as gold’ :) x p

I had a great 10 days in Kos, Greece! How lucky am I that I get to play on a Greek Island and enjoy the beaches and sunshine during the day!? I have to pinch myself sometimes to see if this life is real!! I played 7 nights in a row at the Hamam bar – which (is where Kristian fjellstad plays every other night!!) and is a big outdoor under the stars bar in Kos on Bar St.. I got to meet so many lovely people from Italy, Spain, England, Germany, Holland, Norway, France, Finland, Israel and Switzerland!! Amazing!! I look forward to meeting these new friends in their own countries too, when I tour there!! :) I am always up for ideas if you know somewhere great for an acoustic solo artist to play you can email me here prita@prita.com.au or leave a comment below and I will follow it up! :)

I also had the pleasure of having a few days holiday with my boyfriend and we went to turkey for his Birthday!! Had a great lunch over the water, feeding the fish!! And the waiters came out and sang happy birthday in English and Turkish! Great surprise!! Lol.. That same night the lovely audience at hamam got to hear all about it and when he arrived they all sang him happy birthday too!! :) good times!!

I caught up with some great friends and made some new ones!! Had two amazing visits to the natural thermal hot springs.. one at sunset and one at 2Am in the morning!! Both times amazing.. Star bathing under the moon and counting shooting stars!! Brilliant!!

So today I got dropped off at a new (to me) supermarket in Athens in the suburb I’m living in.. it’s funny how something can be just around the corner and you don’t even know it’s there. I love exploring this place.. there’s so much to explore.. it’s like travelling in one spot.. sort of.. new language to learn – lots of funny moments of broken greek – english transactions.. like today in the supermarket I was staring at the shelves with all the flour looking packets on it.. looking for cupcake making ingredients of course.. and trying to decipher what was flour.. then what kind of flour.. I was picking up packets and looking closely at them trying to read greek – havent learnt the alphabet yet so that may be a bit far off.. but occaissionally they have a bit of english or some other language I can decipher a bit of.. french? italian? something.. anything.. looking looking. then I start smelling the packets in the hope that my nose can tell me what it is.. so I end up choosing a small bag of flour that says in english on the side.. see I found some!! ‘self-raising flour’ yay!@ success!! now only 10 other ingredients to go!! there was a lady hovering with a uniform doing pricing or something.. so I thought ‘oh give it a go’.. so in greek ‘signomi’ (excuse me) do you have icing sugar? ‘ah sakarin, ne~!” (sugar, yes!)
she guides me to another shelf.. and the game continues..

It’s funny how exciting it can be to find things in a new country in a new supermarket.. I spent ages in there filling up my basket with hoummus, cheeses, sundried tomatoes.. soymilk~~ yes I found soymilk!! (big smile) and various other edible things.. peaches, grapes, a chunk of nice looking bread.. ahh.. the joys..

but I must say the patty pans for my cupcake making were pretty plain.. – white – boring.. then I found some tiny tiny tiny ones for petit fours.. all different colours.. much more exciting.. and tiny always tastes better and you can have more.. so it was all good in the end!

and on the walk home as the sun was setting .. the sky was a beautiful dark blue.. I passed a classic looking blue and white greek church with the domed roof.. and stopped to take a photo… it was just one of those moments in time.. satisfied.. laden with shopping bags.. stunning sky.. view.. dreamy heat.. it’s growing on me
